Today, Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), in collaboration with the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, launched the “Sustainability Zone” initiative at Kahramaa Awareness Park, to introduce environmental sustainability to the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup audience. efforts related to holding the tournament.
The “Zone Sustainability” initiative will allow the public to view the various projects, initiatives and operations led by Kahramaa and the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy in the field of sustainability and the fight against climate change over the past ten years.
During the opening, a mural was shown about the history of electricity and water in the State of Qatar, and then the Carbon Zone and Climate Change were inaugurated in the inner building of the park, which includes a dome that shows the effects of climate change and the danger of carbon emissions to life, along with a series of educational devices for educating visitors on how to calculate their carbon footprint, and explaining the elements of a healthy, balanced and sustainable lifestyle, in an interactive, fun and educational way.
Activities and parts of the “Sustainability Zone” are designed to raise the level of environmental awareness among participants, introducing them to the latest methods, practices and technologies used to increase energy efficiency, rationalize consumption and reduce carbon emissions, and inform them of various initiatives aimed at environmental protection and contribution to the achievement of sustainability goals. , up to complete carbon neutrality.
The initiative also includes a section dedicated to recycling, in collaboration with the Seashore Company, where it presents contemporary recycling mechanisms, art and related initiatives. A variety of sustainability products are also available at the Sustainability Bazaar.
His Excellency Eng. Issa bin Hilal Al-Kuwari, Chairman of Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), said in his opening speech: This initiative is an opportunity to inform the world about the great efforts that the State of Qatar is making to achieve environmental sustainability, in within the objectives of the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Qatar National Strategy. Qatar National Environment and Climate Change 2021-2026.
His Excellency added: “The hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar presented an excellent opportunity to boost sustainability efforts and accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources and lower carbon emissions, as sustainability and carbon neutrality are among the main axes in the hosting file, and from the first moment Qatar won it.”
President Kahramaa praised the joint work and fruitful partnership with the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, noting that the first and main part of the initiative is dedicated to reviewing the efforts of the Supreme Committee, in collaboration with KAHRAMAA in this context, as the World Cup stadium models and all aspects are detailed. its sustainability. Initiatives are also being discussed with a number of sustainability partners in the State of Qatar, such as the Seashore Group’s plastic recycling initiative and other initiatives related to energy efficiency, renewable energy and electric vehicles.
For his part, His Excellency Mr. Hassan Abdullah Al-Thawadi, Secretary General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, said in a similar speech at the opening of the Sustainability Zone: “Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation contributed to the success of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, providing us with our electricity and water needs. needed for the tournament”, expressing his satisfaction at attending the opening ceremony of the “Sustainability Zone”, which he believes will contribute to informing all visitors and residents of Qatar about the achievements of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy in the field of sustainability.
In a related context, Engineer Rashid Al-Rahimi, Director of the Department of Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed) in Kahrama, emphasized the importance of this initiative, pointing to the great role that football, as the first popular game in the world, can play in drawing attention to the issues sustainability and the importance of environmental protection. In this regard, he pointed out the existence of a huge screen showing the matches of the tournament so that the attendees could enjoy the enthusiastic atmosphere, after which he would continue his journey with sustainability in the Kahramaa Awareness Park.
He added that Qatar, as the host of this global event, gave Kahrama an important platform and a greater possibility of influence and reach, which was used by spreading the concepts and practices of rationalization, and by developing awareness of environmental sustainability issues in accordance with the goals of the national strategy, as well as global strategic goals for sustainability and development, according to the United Nations.
Al-Rahimi stated that the park includes a section for interactive games for different ages, where football is combined with sustainability, to achieve enjoyment and benefit at the same time, and a whole section is allocated for learning, innovation and general information, covering the aspects related to energy efficiency and climate change, and defining the United Nations’ goals for sustainability, which indicates the participation of the University of Texas and Hamad Bin Khalifa University, as well as a group of young inventors from Qatar. A scientific club during which lectures and project models related to sustainability and new innovations in this area will be held.
On the other hand, Eng. Bodour Al-Meer, Executive Director of the Sustainability Department at the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, said: “The Tarsheed 22 program for renewable energy for schools, which was launched in 2017, is the beginning of a collaboration with Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation and since then many joint projects between the boards have been introduced.” Supreme Projects & Legacy and Kahramaa, as an example of which Kahramaa contributes to reducing the use of temporary diesel generators in all World Cup stadiums, expanding the network and providing us with the necessary energy during the tournament. In addition, Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation has installed electric car charging stations at all stadium locations.
It is interesting that the “Kahramaa Awareness Park” opens its doors to visitors until December 18, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
